In instances where a publication has both an English and Afrikaans version, the decision was made to follow the Audit Bureau of Circulation’s guidelines when determining whether these publications should be measured separately or together. This decision impacts on AMPS 2008A in the following three ways:

1. When the English and Afrikaans versions of a publication have an identical masthead, carry the same advertising and the editorial content is shared, the English and Afrikaans version will be measured on one shufflecard showing a single masthead. Such publications include:

  • FINWEEK
  • tvplus
  • Longevity
  • Sports Illustrated
  • VISI
  • avocado

2. When the English and Afrikaans versions of a publication have different mastheads, but carry the same advertising and the editorial content is shared, the English and Afrikaans versions will be measured on one shufflecard showing both versions’ mastheads. Such publications include:

  • ZOO WEEKLY/ZOO WEEKLIKS
  • Dish/Skottel (DStv Guide/Gids)
  • Edgars Club/Edgars Klub
  • go!/Weg! (previously measured separately)
  • home/tuis (previously measured separately)
  • ideas (Woman’s Value)/idees (dit)
  • topCar/topMotor (previously measured separately)
  • Drive Out/WegRY (WegRY is new – Drive Out was previously measured separately)
  • YOU Pulse/HUISgenoot Pols

3. When the English and Afrikaans versions of a publication have different mastheads and the editorial content is shared (all or partly), but they carry different advertising, the English and Afrikaans versions will be measured on their own separate shufflecards. Such publications include:

  • magic (M-Net TV guide) and m (M-Net TV-gids) (previously measured on one shufflecard)
  • YOU and HUISgenoot
  • people and mense

Newspaper Supplements

Question B7 (When Last supplements were read) previously asked respondents about daily, weekly and fortnightly supplements separately, with each frequency for each newspaper having its own show card. All supplements for each newspaper irrespective of its publishing frequency are now asked together and are depicted on a single show card.

The “When Last” list no longer appears at the bottom of each supplement’s show card but can now be found on the left hand facing page alongside each show card. A further change to be noted is that the day(s) of publication for each supplement have been printed below the masthead.

Monthly supplements are being measured for the first time.

1.2 Electronic Media

The TV Equipment and Electronic Media sections have been joined to form one section named “Electronic Media”.

TV Equipment

The questions on M-Net/DStv decoder(s) and subscription(s) have been revised and replaced with three new questions:

  • Which Pay-TV service(s) (this includes various DStv options, M-Net and a prompt for “Other”) the respondent has in his/her home
  • Which decoder(s) (this includes DStv, M-Net, Vivid and a prompt for “Other”) are currently IN USE in the household
  • DStv interactive channels used/viewed

Television

The question obtaining TV stations/channels viewed “Yesterday” has been expanded into 3 questions. First it is established which TV stations/channels were viewed on a selected weekday (in the past 7 days). Then the respondent is asked which TV stations/channels were viewed last Saturday and last Sunday.

The TV station/channel list has been extensively reworked to only include commercial channels on DStv, Vivid (new for 2008A) and “Other TV Viewing” (i.e. terrestrial TV, M-Net, CSN and other free-to-air channels). Non-commercial channels on DStv and Vivid are recorded as “Other DStv channels” and “Other Vivid Channels”.
