1.2 Electronic Media

Television

All questions related to television equipment have been re-viewed and a number of changes were made.

Two new stand-alone questions were added. One to establish whether or not the respondent’s household is able to receive the M-Net channel 24 hours a day, and a second to establish whether or not the household currently receives any DStv Satellite channels.

The two questions about Pay-TV Services and Decoders in general, have been replaced by three questions about DStv Services and DStv Decoders, specifically.

The DStv satellite subscription options and their definitions changed as follows:

· DStv Premium (Full Service) replaced Full DStv service i.e. the premium bouquet.

In the description of this service, the cost was updated to R499 per month (previously stated as R450-R550 per month).

· DStv Compact replaced DStv Compact Service. The description has been updated as offering 34 channels at a cost of R219 per month (previously 27 channels for R200 per month).

· DStv Select replaced Vodacom DStv Select. This service has been updated as offering 24 channels at a cost of R148 per month (previously 23 channels for R140 per month).

· DStv Easy View now offers 14 channels for R20 per month (previously 16 channels for R210 per year).

A new separate question was added to establish which, if any, of the DStv cultural bouquets the respondent has in his/her household i.e. DStv North Indian Bouquet, DStv South Indian Bouquet and DStv Portuguesa Bouquet.

The question on DStv decoders in the household, emphasises that it must be currently actively in use. The following changes were made to the DStv Decoder options and their definitions:

· The first option remained the Standard Decoder which is a single view decoder.

· The PVR (Standard PVR Decoder) was previously described as the DStv PVR (Personal Video Recorder) decoder. The definition remained unchanged.

· A new decoder option and its description has been added i.e. HD PVR (High Definition PVR Decoder) (that is able to record 150 hours of standard programming or 50 hours of high definition TV. This is a single view decoder and allows you to pause live TV).

· The term XtraView was removed from the DStv DUAL-VIEW decoder option.

An extra question was added to establish the means by which the M-Net channel is received. The answer options are: “via a DStv decoder, that is, via a satellite dish”, “via a separate M-Net decoder in your home, that is, not via DStv” and “receive M-Net communally with the rest of your complex/block of flats”.

An additional 3 new questions were included to establish:

· whether the “DStv on Demand” service has been used in the past 4 weeks by owners of PVR and HD PVR decoders

· if the household is able to receive different DStv channels on 2 or more TV sets at the same time

· any other decoders, apart from DStv and M-Net, currently actively in use in the household

The definition of what is meant by television viewing has been expanded to ensure that both viewing at home and at other places are included.

Due to respondent confusion, it was decided to do away with recording TV stations/channels viewed according to the various platforms on which you can receive them. The list of TV stations/channels shown to respondents, include most of the available stations/channels in South Africa regardless of the method/equipment through which they receive it.

There are two separate questions on TV station/channel viewing in the past 4 weeks:

The first question establishes which channels or stations have been personally watched in the past 4 weeks from a reduced list of 8 options on one screen. The options are: all SABC channels, e-tv, an option for “Any DStv”, M-Net (Main channel), M-Net Community Services Network (CSN) and an option for “Other TV”. For respondents who indicated viewing “Any DStv” or “Other TV”, a second question is asked. This question is an expanded list that establishes which channel(s) or station(s) have been personally watched in the past 4 weeks, but incorporates all terrestrial (community TV included) plus all individual DStv channels and M-Net channels.
