CHANGES INCORPORATED INTO THE AMPS 2009A QUESTIONNAIREFor the 2009 surveys, three major changes occurred:
1. The methodological change from single-screen CAPI to DS-CAPI (double-screen CAPI). Paper showcards and shufflecards have been replaced with electronic prompt screens shown to respondents on a separate laptop. 9 colour mastheads are shown per screen, newspapers separately to magazines.
2. The AMPS® universe is now defined as adult males and females aged 15 years or older. Previously, the universe included adults aged 16 years or older.
3. Two National waves to be done.
Following is a summary of the changes to the contents as agreed upon in the compilation of AMPS®, RAMS® and the Products & Activities questionnaires.

1.2 Electronic Media
Television
The following changes were made to the Pay-TV services question: · The cost of the full DStv service i.e. the premium bouquet subscription is now R450-R550 per month. The cost was previously R400-R500 per month. · Vodacom DStv Select bouquet now offers +/- 23 channels; previously there was an offering of +/- 16 channels. · (Magic World) has been deleted from the DStv Easy View option.
The following changes were made to the question on Decoders: · It is emphasized that with the DStv PVR decoder, a third channel can be recorded at the same time that two different DStv channels on two different TV sets are viewed. · DStv DUAL-VIEW decoder is now described as DStv DUAL-VIEW/XtraView. XtraView is an enhanced Dual-View offering. · The phrase “requiring a satellite dish” has been added to the “Other free-to-air decoder” option.
The question on DStv interactive channels has been removed.
The questions on TV channels or stations viewed in the past 4 weeks, past 7 days and yesterday were expanded to include 4 sub-questions to ensure that respondents understand the different prompt screens for the various TV channels. The sub-questions are on:
· DStv channels viewed (2 screens) · Free-to-air satellite channels viewed, for example Vivid · TV stations/channels viewed without a satellite dish · Any other TV channels viewed (not covered in the first 3 sub-questions)

Deleted Channels: SABC Africa
Name Changes:
The three questions for TV channels or stations viewed yesterday (Monday – Friday), last Saturday and last Sunday have been replaced with a single “yesterday” question irrespective of what day “yesterday” refers to.
A new question has been added to establish where TV was viewed “yesterday”.
Radio
The list of radio stations has been updated to reflect that of the Radio Diary (See Section 3).
2. PRODUCTS/SERVICES
2.1 Internet
A new Internet activity has been included, namely “Social networking e.g. using MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, Windows Live Spaces, You Tube, etc”.
The options for type of Internet connection at home have been revised.
2.2 Cellphones
HTC has been included on the list of makes of cellphones.
2.3 Financial Services
In the list of financial services, micro loan and other personal loan have been combined into one, now listed as “Personal loan”.
Teba Bank, American Express and Diners Club have been added to the list of financial institutions. Old Mutual Bank and Pick ‘n Pay Go Banking have been deleted from the list. Rand Merchant Bank is known as RMB Private Bank.
The two questions on brand of credit card(s) and debit/cheque card(s) held have been deleted.
Ownership of short term insurance has been moved out of the list of policies and investment plans and is now a stand-alone question.
SA Eagle is now known as Zurich, and has been reflected as such.
2.4. Furniture & Appliances
Sheet Street has been added to the list of stores, and Dion has had a name change to Dion Wired.
2.5 Food & Groceries
Sasol Delight has been added to the list of stores.
2.6 Clothing & Shoes
Mr Price Sport has been added to the list of stores.
2.7 Durables
Air conditioner (excluding fans) has been added to the list of durables.
In the list of stores, Dion has been changed to Dion Wired.
2.8 Personal Data
The age categories have been expanded to include a category for 15 year olds.
Household and personal income categories have been revised. The lower income groups have been collapsed to R1-R499, and the highest expanded to R50 000+.
Questions on household and personal income now ask respondents to include government grants as a source of income.
Respondents are asked to include gardeners, in the number of domestic workers or household helpers working for the household.
3. RADIO Jan-Jun 2009 (Compared to Radio Jul-Dec 2008)
The universe for RAMS® 2009A, as for AMPS®, has been changed to all adult males and females in the household aged 15 years or older. Diary flooding has been expanded to the small town/village and rural component of the RAMS® sample.

4. PRODUCT RESEARCH AND ACTIVITIES QUESTIONNAIRE
4.1 THE BRANDED PRODUCT CATEGORY SECTION:
An additional four categories have been added to the Product Section. These are:
· Chewing Gum/Bubble Gum (consume – past 7 days) · White Sugar (purchase – past 4 weeks) · Brown Sugar (purchase – past 4 weeks) · Canned Fish (purchase – past 4 weeks) · Facial Tissues (purchase – past 4 weeks)
The previous Sugar category was sub-divided into the two new sugar categories mentioned above.
For the Toilet Blocks/Liquid Refills category, an explanation of what is meant by liquid refills has been provided.
4.2 INTERESTS AND ACTIVITIES SECTION
Two new activities have been added:
· Other arts and crafts e.g. beading, pottery, painting, mosaic, etc. · Read a free magazine delivered to your home/collected from a shopping centre, school or taxi rank.
The activity “Attend a religious gathering” has been extended with: (excluding funerals)
Indian Music has been added to the genres of music interest.
Little Caesar’s has been deleted from the list of Fast Food Outlets.
4.3 ATTITUDES
A total of 16 new statements have been added to this section as follows:
Agreement: · One should follow what is happening with regard to sport · People from other countries should be welcomed in South Africa as they bring knowledge and skills that the country needs · Shopping is a pleasure · Women should occupy senior positions in government and at work · People should eat more fruit and vegetables · Children should be taught in their home language
Applicability: · If a company sponsors a sport I am interested in, I will be more likely to buy its products · I like to go to sporting events · I am resentful that people come to South Africa and take away jobs and houses that should be kept for South African citizens
Similarity · People who think work should be just a way to earn money · Those who are in favour of stopping people from other African countries coming to South Africa · People who make an effort to save electricity and water · People who do not litter · People who enjoy participating in sport
Truth · I know a lot of people in my community · It is foreigners who are mainly responsible for the high level of crime in South Africa
Two atttitude statements have been deleted:
· Shopping is no longer a pleasure (Agreement) · The old world is out of touch with today (Truth)
4.4 WEBSITE SECTION
An introduction has been added with an indication that the Internet can be accessed using a computer or a cellular phone.
“Educational Institutions” has been added to the list of Website types.
An example has been added with an explanation of how the Website questions should be completed.
All the questions on which Websites have been visited in the past 12 months include the prompt "using the Internet”.
In the list of general Websites visited, 5 additional Websites have been included:
